When your child is being loud or displaying unwanted attention our first reaction is to react…Loudly.
Children seek calm and quiet and act out when they do not feel safe and secure. Children will also be surprised by your behaviour and will be curious. Whisper to them what is going to happen next or what you would like them to do. Use a soft soothing voice. This forces them to be extra still and quiet so they can hear what you are saying and also means they need to come to you so they can hear which allows a closeness between the two of you.
You can also try singing in a gentle voice as children love song and games.
I sing everything in my classroom and even children in the angriest moods will feel settled where as demanding them to do something or raising my voice would only provoke them further and cause more stress for them and myself.
Try this for yourself and let me know how you get on.
